Create a website yourself: the 5 rules to follow
Creating your website without going through a professional is not impossible.
By using the right tools (often based on software or SaaS solutions) and carefully following the different stages of the process, the task is accessible to most neophytes.
However, there are five basic rules to follow to have a successful website that attracts visitors and respects the rules of search engines like Google.
1. Adapt the site to browsing on different devices
Around the world, the mobile is on the way to becoming the main medium for browsing the web. Last year, the weight of internet traffic generated on mobile devices in Pakistan exceeded 37% of overall traffic. Consequently, any site must be "mobile responsive" , which allows it to adapt to any type of support.
All the elements of a page and its content must therefore be designed to offer a pleasant appearance and the same reading comfort on the screen of a computer, a tablet or a smartphone. Without this essential principle of an intuitive user experience (UX) , the bounce rate risks exploding (i.e. a non-transformation of traffic into contact), affecting the natural referencing of the site .
2. Customize your theme instead of keeping the generic theme
Common website builders like WordPress , Joomla, Shopify or Wix offer generic themes as the basis for building a website. However, this standard framework must absolutely be customized according to the company's or brand's graphic charter and marketing messages (type and size of font, colors, page layout, etc.).
This visual identity , which distinguishes the site from others on the web, has a positive impact on its visibility. If the graphic charter does not yet exist, it must be defined and applied to all the pages taking into account the activity, values, vision… and marketing positioning of the company.
3. Take care of the visual aspect of the pages
In addition to the content, the readability of web pages is essential for the non-verbal communication of the site. Before creating a website , it is necessary to think about the layout of the different elements (texts, images, click-to-action buttons, drop-down menus) according to a certain logic in order to optimize the visitor's journey and achieve the objective. fixed for the page (to subscribe to a newsletter, to sell, to convey a message, etc.). Backgrounds, typography are also important.
4. Clarify calls to action
Each site includes at least one page aimed at converting visitors into qualified leads or directly into customers. Calls to action (CTA or call-to-action in English) must be inserted on the page in a natural way and in coherence with the content. These are sentences such as:
- "Take advantage of this offer now",
- " Subscribe to the newsletter ",
- “Start a free trial”,
- "Order now and choose my gift",
- "Download the pdf documentation",
- etc.
The placement of CTAs (in the form of a button/link) must also be carefully chosen, to avoid arriving too early or too late.
5. Analyze its performance and make the necessary improvements
A website is not a fixed tool. On the contrary, a good ranking on the results pages of Google is granted only to dynamic sites.
It is thus necessary to optimize its site regularly on the technical level and via the regular publication of relevant content. In addition, it is essential to continuously check its performance and make any necessary adjustments.
Here are some examples of effective tools or plugins : SEO optimization of page content, A/B testing for SEO ranking, optimization of site speed, files and images, Google Analytics settings for performance monitoring… Many plugins, free or paid, are available to improve the site's efficiency, but this still requires a bit of computer skill!!!
